ASL Storytelling - David Goes to School

David is full of energy and mischief! In this lively ASL version of David Shannon’s picture book. Watch him learn classroom rules through expressive signs, exaggerated facial grammar, and playful use of space. Kids pick up school-ready vocabulary such as “quiet,” “line up,” “sorry,” and “great job.

Try it together

  1. Rule Charades – Pause after each rule break (“No yelling!”). Act it out silently while the other person guesses and signs the correct rule.

  2. Yes/No Sort – Make two piles of sticky notes: ✅ good choices, ❌ not-so-good choices. After the story, sort David’s actions and discuss why each goes where.

  3. David’s Do-Over – Pick one “oops” moment and brainstorm a better choice. Re-sign the scene with David following the rule, reinforces social skills plus People Smart thinking.
